The motion detectors operate off a PIR sensor generally from horizontal movement. This is because people or animals walk from one side of the sensor to the other. Rather then moving in a vertical direction. These motion detectors can either be for deterring animals or knowing when an animal comes into an area. As well as being used for security purposes to know if someone is on your property.
